Well, he's a country boy in upper middle class clothes doing upper middle class drugs until he's passed out. Drinking middle class booze to drown his upper middle class blues. Always the first one in, and the last out. He's got upper middle class dreams in his Tennessee head, but he's still gonna, still gonna, still gonna die with upper middle class dreams in his Tennessee head. He's still gonna, still gonna, still gonna die one day. He's gonna die some day. He never ever eats McDonald's, but he's got no problem with blow, though. He bought his Che Guevara shirt at a chain boutique down in Soho. He's got upper middle class dreams in his Tennessee head, but he's still gonna, still gonna, still gonna die with upper middle class dreams in his Tennessee head. He's still gonna, still gonna, still gonna die one day. He's gonna die some day. I said he makes his noise with a cigarette voice that he stole from some TV show. And he never did find his upper middle class mind until he started drawing lines like his heroes. He's got upper middle class dreams in his Tennessee head, but he's still gonna, still gonna, still gonna die with upper middle class dreams in his Tennessee head. He's still gonna, still gonna, still gonna die with upper middle class dreams in his Tennessee head. He's still gonna, still gonna, still gonna die one day. He's gonna die some day. He's just a country boy in upper middle class clothes doing upper middle class drugs until he's passed out.

These days on the road to Damascus, there's not so many visions of the Lord. There's people asking, but he's already asked us to forget about the shit that he said before except the parts about the brothers against brothers and all the living and the dying by the sword. And these days, on the streets of Caracas, there's not so many pickup stickball games. It's hard to see pitches through the glare of the rockets and the teargas makes it hard to run the bases. There's people sayin' it's the price you pay for progress, but the argument's not carryin' that much weight. At some point, you've gotta decide what side you're on, whose side you wanna be on. These days, all the walls we build between us have stopped being poetic metaphors. There's a real one from Tijuana to Juarez that we built with the scrap metal from the wars. Like some collective solitary confinement runs from Darien to Arizona's borders. At some point, you've gotta decide whose side you're on, and what side you wanna be on. These days, well the travelling's not as easy as just following stars like the wise men did. Mary and Joseph have a hell of a time getting to Bethlehem to have their holy kid. Get turned away at some military checkpoint, it's a long, long walk back to Nazareth. At some point, you've gotta decide what side you're on, and whose side you wanna be on. These days on the road to Damascus, there's not so many visions of the Lord.

Whatshisname 03:32
You think I'm saying things that ain't worth saying, but you've been playing strings that ain't worth playing. Your music school melodies, and diminished sevenths on your D's. But there's nothing in it. And don't that bother you none? Don't that bother you none? I know that it isn't fair to fight you on all these feelings I don't have a right to. But something in it just doesn't seem to square, it's just one stop and then you're there. There is nothing in it. And don't that bother you none? Don't that bother you none? I guess it bothers me some. You think I'm saying things that ain't worth saying. But you've been laying girls who ain't worth laying. It makes no difference if she came when she's in your phone as 'whatshername.' There is nothing in it. And don't that bother you none? Don't that bother you none? I guess it bothers me some.

Omar 03:05
Omar doesn't know whether he threw the grenade or not. Sometimes memory's a liar, and he knows it. Things start getting hazy right around when he got shot, and when he woke up all the soldiers said he'd thrown it. The boy just wants a chance, after everything, in spite of all of it, just to be a man. To be human, not the object of our politics. Omar's been a lot of things to lots of different people, but the one thing that he never is is Omar. Fourteen years old, and on a plane to Kandahar, the kind of history you don't read on your sonar. Eight years in Cuba, maybe Omar met his match. The kind of wounds that won't be cauterized or spoken. Things have gotten better now that he learned how to work the latch. You know, where Omar's been, the windows didn't open. The boy just wants a chance, after everything, in spite of all of it, just to be a man. To be human, not the object of our politics. Omar doesn't know whether he threw the grenade or not. Sometimes the answers change depending on who's asking. Things start getting hazy right around when he got shot. You know, there's space between the truth and just what happened.

Did you think I didn't notice you only call me baby when my mouth is full? Do you really want forgiveness? Or do you just like the way I look when I'm uncomfortable? I really badly want you but I have got the sense not to let you know. That way, when it changes, I won't have to worry that you won't let me go. Usually, I can play it all on your terms, just not tonight. If it was up to me, you'd never see me squirm, but I can't help myself tonight. Do you think I didn't realize you only show affection once them lines is drawn? I'm not overreacting. I'm just over-invested. I think I've heard this one. Did I ask too much? Did I ask too much? Well, I'll back off. Baby, I can back off. Usually, I can play it all on your terms, just not tonight. If it was up to me, you'd never see me squirm but I can't help myself, no I can't help myself tonight.
